When SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor on 14 August 2026, the all-stock deal implied an equity value of USD 60 billion. Cursor is an AI software-development environment in which teams use models to write, understand, change and review code. SpaceX has acquired a firm whose Asia-Pacific and Japan leadership is positioning the region as one of its largest growth opportunities.

What happened

Simon Green, Cursor's president for Asia-Pacific and Japan, told Asian Business Review he estimates about USD 6 trillion is spent on technology each year. Software development accounts for about USD 1.8 trillion of that. Around 40% to 50% of the software money, he said, goes to keeping existing applications running, systems built decades ago or five years ago, still in production. Green estimates that this translates into a potential USD 20 billion a year revenue opportunity for Cursor across APJ.

Enterprises from large groups to smaller organisations, he said, are trying to refactor those applications because they were built on old technology. Money spent keeping the lights on is money that is not going into new products and new customers. Green said Cursor can compress work that used to take months and years into days and weeks.

Cursor is moving the traditional software development life cycle (SDLC) towards an AI-native, agent-driven workflow. It is also expanding beyond writing new code. Its new Cursor Origin product is designed to help teams understand existing codebases and work across large software systems, bringing the company's AI tooling closer to the problem Green is describing: not just creating software, but understanding and changing software that has been running for years.

This is significant because legacy modernisation starts with understanding what already exists. An AI system that can explain a codebase, trace dependencies and identify how a change could affect an application is potentially more valuable to a bank than an AI assistant that simply writes a new function.

What it means

That is the proposition SpaceX now owns in APJ. Cursor gives SpaceX an enterprise software environment in which developers and engineering teams use AI to understand, build and modify software. SpaceXAI brings the Grok model family. Grok Bot, launched in beta on 11 August, extends that AI capability beyond software development into agents that can operate across the applications people already use.

Cursor sits at the point where AI meets an organisation's software estate. Today, that means helping teams understand and change applications. Grok provides the model capability, while Grok Bot points toward agents that can act across the software surrounding those applications. If SpaceX eventually connects those capabilities, the combination could move from helping enterprises change their software to helping them operate the workflows those applications support.

That is not yet a combined enterprise product. But it gives the acquisition a larger strategic possibility: Cursor could become the enterprise entry point for a broader SpaceX AI stack, rather than simply an AI coding product.

APJ is attractive to Cursor because enterprises contain enormous amounts of software that still runs the business. Green pointed to two kinds of buyer. He described how digital natives, such as Grab in Singapore and Rakuten in Japan, are under pressure to keep shipping. Banks are moving because they sit on legacy applications and technical debt. He described a case study with a large Australian bank, unnamed in the interview, and said Cursor is talking to banks across the region.

If Cursor can deliver the compression Green describes, refactoring applications in weeks rather than years, the value is larger than a faster coding assistant. A bank could change what it budgets for modernisation, how long a migration is allowed to run, how it prices technical debt, when a product can launch, and where it puts developers. Competitiveness follows those clocks. What Green emphasised is that AI holds the potential to change the economics of enterprise software modernisation in this region.

Japan is "critically important" for Cursor, according to Green, as large firms have been running core systems for long enough that replacement is a multi-year programme. Singapore is the centre of gravity for serving the region: headquarters, buyers, and a hub. Indonesia is "incredibly important" because of the size of the market and the number of large banks.

India is "very important" as a software and IT-services ecosystem that writes and maintains other people's systems. Australia and New Zealand are mature enterprise markets, and South Korea is the next target for expansion.

Whether Cursor can turn that map into a regional platform, and what SpaceX adds to the combination, will shape how far this opportunity extends beyond AI-assisted software development.

What to watch

Do the economics show up? Whether customers report shorter migration timelines, lower modernisation costs or reduced technical debt, not simply higher developer productivity.

Does Cursor stay a development company? Whether SpaceX keeps Cursor as the software-change layer or connects it with Grok and other agentic products to create a broader enterprise workflow.

Does APJ become a repeatable model? Whether Cursor develops distinct commercial, technical and implementation models for Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Australia/NZ and Korea rather than treating APJ as one market.
